What is Trauma?

The word trauma may be used in two different contexts. It can be a physical injury inflicted upon a person by an external agent, or it can be psychological trauma which is an emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event, or caused by a situation or event that we have found to be 'traumatic'.

When trauma presents, the person often feels as if the trauma just happened and the body and brain are in a state of hyper-arousal. This might involve nightmares, flashbacks, irritability, moodiness, tearfulness, sleep problems, anger, rumination and being reminded constantly of the memory with unsuccessful efforts to fully push it out of your mind.

Traumatic events can happen at any age and can cause long-lasting harm. Everyone has a different reaction to trauma with our experience and understanding of trauma being both subjective and personal. We can have the same or a similar experience to another person yet be affected entirely differently by the event.

Trauma can be caused by many things, including:

  • one-off or ongoing events

  • being directly harmed

  • witnessing harm to someone else

  • living in a traumatic atmosphere

  • being affected by trauma within the family unit or community

We can experience trauma, where we have felt:

  • frightened

  • under threat

  • humiliated

  • rejected

  • abandoned

  • invalidated

  • unsafe

  • unsupported

  • trapped

  • ashamed

  • powerless

Why might trauma occur?
What is birth trauma?

The concept of 'birth trauma' is extremely new, with birth as a possible traumatic event only being recognised in research in the 2000's.

A key factor as to whether a birthing parent experiences an event as traumatic or not is the subjective experience of the individual and often relates to birthing parents / women feeling uncared for during such a vulnerable time.

During birth trauma may be caused by:

  • A threat (e.g. fear of injury / death)

  • Poor communication (e.g. not being listened to)

  • Physical trauma (e.g. injury / surgery)

It may be that the birth itself was not traumatic, but that events around it were and may relate to the journey through or experiences during pregnancy, the postnatal period, feeding challenges, amongst many other difficulties that an expectant or new parent may experience.

3 Step Rewind

As a 3 Step Rewind Practitioner, I work with you at any stage of your journey to address and help process any trauma that you have experienced.

My support may be accessed by anyone, including parents and birth professionals who wish to process and move on from their trauma experience in a safe way, with their trauma experience often then becoming a distant memory.

The 3 Step Rewind Process can help with any trauma that is preventing you from taking steps to conceive or that is impacting upon your pregnancy, birth or postpartum experience. Such trauma may relate to pre-birth experiences, or it may be trauma that you experienced at any point during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth or postpartum).

It may be that as a birth partner, you yourself experienced trauma relating to the birth or you may have experienced other trauma that you would like to address to allow for presence and peace in relation to your parenting journey, as such I am here for you too.

Other talking therapies, such as CBT and EMDR require that the individual talk about their experience repeatedly and in-depth, which can in itself re-traumatise and repeatedly trigger a trauma response. In addition, other talking therapies may even aim for the individual to reframe their experience and beliefs in relation to what happened.

3 Step Rewind provides you with the space to talk about your experience if you so wish in a non-judgmental and safe environment. However, you are also able to work through the process without having to discuss or go into any of what happened - this space is there for you, but it is entirely up to you and you can instead choose to simply remember your experience rather than sharing this with me. Therefore, whether you choose to talk about your experience or not, 3 Step Rewind is still highly effective.

As a trained birth worker and being a mum who has experienced birth and postpartum trauma, I am in a unique position to be able to understand and empathise with what you may be going through.

3 Step Rewind is generally held over 3x sessions (though individual sessions can be arranged). The technique works by allowing you, whilst in a deeply relaxed state, to reprocess the memory so that it becomes stored as a 'normal memory' rather than continuing to trigger the stress / fight, flight, freeze response.

3 Step Rewind is delivered over 3 sessions, lasting 90-120 minutes each. Sessions are currently online, from the comfort of your own home and can be delivered via Zoom, Skype or Google Meet.

All 3 sessions are charged at £160 (or £65 per session) + venue cost where applicable.

Note: I offer a free, no obligation consultation of up to 30 minutes to discuss my services offered.  To book a free consultation head to my calendar.

Parents who are approaching a subsequent birth following trauma, may wish to contact me regarding my trauma-sensitive birth package, combining KG Hypnobirthing and 3 Step Rewind.
